90 RRC v8 auto to 300tdi

Post  larzanderson on Wed Jun 23, 2010 12:19 am

For better or worse I am now committed, I have bought the engine and paid for shipping. A 95 300tdi with less than 90k on the clock is steaming its way to my garage. I am spending the next month waiting for it to arrive and questioning my sanity. What I have is a 1990 RRC with a tired petrol 3.9 V-8 and a rebuilt ZF auto box, pretty much all you can get in the US. The engine is coming with a used up diesel ZF behind it. Until I get into it I don't know exactly how far gone it is but I am hoping that with two too work with I can get one going. I know the shift points and stall are different between the petrol and diesel, but all the other internals seem to be the same. I am hoping I can swap the torque converter, valve body and bell housing from the worn diesel into the working petrol and and come up with a drivable unit. Any one out there know if this is possible? I plan on rebuilding the diesel as a first choice but I am just trying to plan for the worst.

I have thought about it. Guys over here are doing it all the time.
I have to get it in and running first.
